Service charges usually apply to flats with common areas although some houses may also have communal grounds.
Only those residents who benefit from a service pay a service charge. The service charge is paid on top of rent.
If you pay a service charge, you will receive a schedule which details how much you are expected to pay and how it has been calculated.
The rules for tenants, leaseholders and shared owners are different and this is explained further in the Service Charges Handbook Leaflet.
